US Sports Camps Supports Soccer Without Borders With T-Shirts and Scholarships
San Rafael, CA (PRWEB) October 10, 2017 -- Nike Soccer Camps recently distributed T-shirts to the local Oakland, CA sector and is working with SWB to establish a scholarship fund, providing participants the opportunity to attend a Nike Soccer Camp.
Soccer Without Borders began programming in 2006 to address three critical issues facing young people from 59 nations, living in underserved communities throughout the world:
1. A lack of safe spaces where young people feel cared for, have a voice and can experience the joy of sport.
2. A lack of opportunity for youth to actively explore social issues and community challenges.
3. A lack of social capital and access to potential opportunities for education, employment and personal growth.
"Soccer Without Borders serves refugee and immigrant youth, many of whom face significant financial, cultural, and logistical barriers to participation in sport and other extracurriculars," states Mary McVeigh, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Soccer Without Borders. “Donations of time, equipment, and funds from thoughtful people and partners make our 100% free programs possible. Thank you to US Sports Camps and Nike Soccer Camps for helping us play for change!"
Soccer Without Border’s mission is to use soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing underserved youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success. Their holistic, evidence-based model combines soccer practices and games with academic and language support, civic engagement, and cultural exchange activities, while proactively reducing barriers to entry that typically leave newcomers excluded. Together in a welcoming team environment led by a caring mentor-coach, newcomer youth advance academically, develop personally, make healthy lifestyle choices, build social capital, and develop English language skills. Their program model has been refined and expanded over the last 10 years across key U.S. cities with remarkable results, including a 95% high school graduation rate and 90%+ college enrollment for veteran programs.
When US Sports Camps EVP Jan O’Connor heard about Soccer Without Borders she immediately wanted to help. "I see how sports positively affect the lives of kids. We hope that in providing opportunities to attend our camps we can help brighten their lives," says O’Connor.
