USA Officers Prevent Medical Crises

At a facility in Orlando, FL, Security Officer Vernon Doniphan was performing a routine patrol when he noticed a specimen that seemed out of place in its surroundings. Noticing the “RUSH” label and that the specimen was in the wrong lab, Officer Doniphan contacted the lab to confirm the correct procedure for the specimen. Then he noticed that the directions he received from the lab contradicted a warning label on the specimen. Officer Doniphan went on to contact the senior lab technician at home to ensure that the specimen was handled properly. He was right to be concerned. Following the original instructions from the lab would have destroyed the specimen.
The senior lab technician wrote to USA to say, “I am very grateful that he did not listen to this individual and instead took it upon himself to call me at home and question how to handle this specimen. Had Vernon not been as thorough - thinking outside of the box to further question how to handle this specimen - and had he not taken the initiative to call me at home - the results for this patient could have ended differently.”
At another hospital in Orlando, Security Officer Angel Perez was on post in the emergency department when a woman rushed in and told him her husband was having a heart attack in her car. Procedure called for Officer Perez to contact ER Triage, but he received no immediate reply. Recalling his training and knowledge of hospital procedure, Perez quickly announced a Rapid Response Alert over the ER page system. Within seconds, first responders were tending the patient and providing critical care. Officer Perez was recognized by the hospital’s ICU director for his potentially lifesaving actions.
