Kurt Cobain wore them during the 90s grunge era, while NWA were adopting them into hip-hop culture. Pop princesses like Rihanna and Miley Cyrus have been spotted in them too, but they’re also never far from Lil Wayne or Wiz Khalifa’s feet. Every rock band worth their salt has a pair of trusty converse and Kirsten Stewart even wears hers with designer frocks on the red carpet. Converse are universal and people always put their own stamp on them. The biggest debate amongst fans is whether to have Converse that are box fresh and clean, or worn and dirty.
When Rihanna wears sneakers, she wears box fresh black or white Converse. Converse enthusiasts speculate on the best way to keep them looking new and people have some weird and wonderful ways of cleaning them. One way to keep them clean is to wrap them in a pillow case and put them in the washing machine on a cool wash with some whitener – when the wash finishes stuff some newspaper into the Converse while their drying to keep the shape. To clean the rubber parts of them use tooth paste – apply to an old toothbrush and scrub to remove any marks, wash the toothpaste off with a wet cloth. Alternatively, create a paste with white vinegar and baking soda then apply to the shoe using an old toothbrush, this should clean up white Converse and get them looking new.
Kirsten Stewart likes her Converse to have a worn in look, this can be achieved in several different ways. For the worn in look take them to a high brick wall that has a rough texture – repeatedly throw them off the wall to make them look scuffed and worn in. For an even dirtier look wear them while walking through a puddle – once they have dried off the box fresh white should have disappeared. Another way to achieve a worn in look is take some sand paper and rub gently over the pumps, wear the shoes out for the next few days afterwards and the dirt will stick to the newly created rough areas easily, giving them a vintage appearance.
