USNC for UN Women San Francisco Announces Third Annual Global Voices Film Festival
Leading Bay Area non-profit hosts festival featuring groundbreaking films written, produced, and directed by women around the world
SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The United States National Committee (USNC) for UN Women San Francisco, the non-profit chapter that educates and engages local communities about global women's issues, announced today the launch of its third annual Global Voices Film Festival. The Global Voices Film Festival will occur over two days and three locations on May 16 at GoPro headquarters in San Mateo and on May 18 at the Lucasfilm Premier Theater and Salesforce headquarters in San Francisco. Tickets are now available for purchase here: globalvoicesfilmfestival.org.
In 2018, only eight percent of the 250 highest grossing films were directed by women. The UN Women SF Global Voices Film Festival will place a much needed spotlight on the unique voices, experiences, and untold stories of women around the world. The festival will feature 10 brand-new, independent films—two feature-length films and eight shorts—all written, produced, and directed by groundbreaking women filmmakers. The Global Voices Film Festival will serve as a fundraiser for UN Women to continue supporting women producers, directors and writers, who are creating some of the most insightful and innovative work in cinema today.
The Global Voices Film Festival features several keynote speakers including: Emmy® Award-winner and executive producer of the animated adventure series "Star Wars Resistance" on Disney Channel, Athena Portillo; Lucasfilm Deputy Chief Counsel, Rhonda Hjort; Research Director for the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in Media and a professor at Occidental College, Caroline Heldman; Advanced lecturer at Stanford and Founder and Executive Producer of the annual Getting Played Symposium on Equity in the Entertainment Industry and Awards, Kathleen Antonia Tarr; Director of "Courage to Question" VR Collaboration between Google and the UN, Megan Sullivan; and VP of Imaging and Audio Technology at GoPro, Ingrid Cotoros.
The Filmmaker Awards Afterparty will also be hosted by the Global Voices Film Festival at Salesforce headquarters in San Francisco. Industry insiders, film aficionados, and women's empowerment advocates will gather alongside the filmmakers for a private dinner and panel discussion.
