USP Joins Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission for International Forum on Strengthening Cooperation and Recognition of Pharmaceutical Standards
Rockville, Maryland (PRWEB) November 18, 2014 -- Leadership from the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) recently joined with Chinese colleagues for the 7th Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission (ChP) & USP Science Symposium and 2014 ChP Science Annual Meeting, November 13 and 14, in Chengdu, China.
Jointly hosted by ChP and USP, the two-day forum featured leaders and experts from pharmacopoeias and regulatory authorities in the United States, China, Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil and other countries. The forum focused on international coordination and mutual recognition of pharmaceutical standards in areas such as chemical medicine, biologics, Traditional Chinese Medicine, pharmaceutical excipients, packaging materials and other related fields. The symposium also included more than 400 representatives from China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) and China’s National Food and Drug Inspection System, along with scientific research institutes and drug manufacturers.
Organized by China’s food and drug international exchange center, the theme of the forum was “Strengthening cooperation, Harmonizing standards, Promoting mutual recognition". Attendees were welcomed by Mr. Wang Lifeng, Director of Department of Drug and Cosmetics Registration, China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA), and Mr. Chen Yong, Vice Chief of the Sichuan Food and Drug Administration, who opened the forum. Keynote addresses were presented by Mr. Zhang Wei, Secretary General of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia Commission (ChP) and Dr. Ronald T. Piervincenzi, Chief Executive Officer of USP.
The symposium also included an industry roundtable session that included representatives from industry associations and multinational and Chinese pharmaceutical companies. This forum enabled USP, ChP and other pharmacopoeias and regulatory authorities to learn of industry perspectives on pharmacopoeial standards and harmonization. As part of this open discussion, ChP and USP encouraged participants to engage with pharmacopoeias to explore ways of promoting international cooperation and harmonization, and mutual and multilateral recognition. USP and ChP also engaged in bilateral discussion about future opportunities to work together.
