Valley of the Sun United Way and Arizona State University Students Break World Record
PHOENIX (PRWEB) October 29, 2014 -- Valley of the Sun United Way volunteers and hundreds of ASU students set a world record on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the World Record to End Hunger event. The Guinness Book of World Records® “Most Hunger Relief Kits Assembled” is now 1,993 in 3:00 minutes and was made possible by more than 2,000 volunteers. The historic event will transform lives for children who struggle with hunger.
“We are grateful that so many corporate volunteers, ASU students and young professionals joined us to help end hunger and empower local children to succeed,” explained Merl Waschler, President and CEO of Valley of the Sun United Way. “Breaking the record demonstrates that by working together we will create a stronger community for us all."
Eighty-two thousand households in Maricopa County experience chronic hunger. Of those households, nearly half include children. For these children, weekends are an especially difficult time. Without school breakfast and lunch programs – sometimes their only reliable source of food – they may not have regular meals over the weekend.
Volunteers assembled the food bags with non-perishable and easy to prepare meals to help more than 500 children overcome hunger each week and come to school Monday ready to learn. This is part of United Way’s WeekEnd Hunger Backpack program and serves 2,000 students at eight local schools each month.
