Vermont Governor Shines Light on Heroin Epidemic
Malibu, CA (PRWEB) January 27, 2014 -- In his 2014 State of the State address on January 8th, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin drew special attention to what he described as the state’s "full-blown heroin crisis." Gov. Shumlin presented a series of facts that painted an alarming picture of opiate proliferation in the Northeastern state.
Shumlin reported that in Vermont, since the year 2000 there has been a 770% increase in demand for treatment of opiate-related issues. His statement detailed what began as an Oxycontin and prescription drug addiction problem has since bloomed into a significant problem with heroin.
Since 2000, 250% more people have sought treatment for heroin dependency in Vermont, with the largest spike of a 40% increase seen in the last year. Between 2010 and 2013, more than five times as many federal indictments were handed down against heroin dealers in the state. Last year, the governor also reported that there were twice as many deaths in Vermont as the year previous.
"Opiates and heroin can be particularly habit-forming, especially for individuals who are dealing with untreated physical or emotional trauma," said Pax Prentiss, CEO of Passages Addiction Treatment Centers. "At Passages, we welcome anyone looking to break the cycle of dependency and restore the balance of their life without drugs or alcohol."

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:
Father and son team Chris and Pax Prentiss founded Passages Malibu in 2001. Its second location, Passages Ventura, first opened its doors in 2009. The two alcohol & drug abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 step/AA model of addiction treatment by utilizing a holistic program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than attributing addiction to an incurable disease.
Both Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura accept insurance and each have earned the coveted Joint Commission (JCAHO) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs.
Passages Malibu was named the #1 treatment center in the world by Healthcare Global, one of the "Most Luxurious Places to Dry Out" by Forbes magazine, and the Huffington Post recently acknowledged Passages as a center that "caters to a high-end crowd, with many CEOs, entrepreneurs and high-powered professionals among its clients."
The co-founders are also authors of an acclaimed series of addiction treatment books, including their groundbreaking, flagship title, The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.
