Veterinary Pharmacy, Diamondback Drugs, Is Proud to Sponsor “Going Batty for Bracken”
San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- Diamondback Drugs is pleased to announce its sponsorship of “Going Batty for Bracken,” a 3-month art exhibition presented by South Texas Veterinary Ophthalmology. The event is currently taking place at The Greller Gallery, an art space located within the Veterinary Referral Emergency Center in San Antonio, Texas.
The exhibition proudly features the collaborative works of two lauded San Antonio artists: Maureen “Momo” Brown, and Charles “Pompa” Harrison.
As a sponsor of the exhibition, Diamondback Drugs (in concert with Frost Bank), will be collaborating on this community initiative with the gallery. The goal of the exhibition and event is to raise awareness and funding for preserving the bat colony and surrounding lands of Bracken Cave.
More About the Artists at The Greller Gallery
Brown, a San Antonian by birth, is perhaps best known for the designs for which she earned her nickname. “Momos,” as she calls them, are stream-of-conscious doodles filled with vibrant color, animals, eyes, and intriguing faces. In addition to being a popular artist and designer, she’s also an archaeologist and founder of the Museum of the Coastal Bend in Victoria, Texas.
Charles “Pompa” Harrison is a multi-media artist with more than two decades of experience, and 300 exhibitions under his belt. A native of Aguascalientes, Mexico, Harrison’s work is well known in his adopted hometown of San Antonio, and in the greater South Texas region. His dazzling public sculptures are fan favorites, and his paintings and sculptures have been shown throughout the American southwest.
Together, this artistic couple has created a collection of paintings and light fixtures all inspired by the Bracken Cave area.
Bracken Cave: Legend Among Nature Lovers
Bracken Cave is something of a legend among the many nature lovers in the American Southwest. And perhaps most notably because it’s home to the largest colony of bats in the world. Every spring, an estimated 20 million Mexican Free-tailed bats swarm to the cave to give birth, making a home there until the weather cools in October.
Though the cave is located on a wildlife preserve, the fate of these airborne mammals was recently threatened by a planned residential development. As bats are sensitive to light pollution, there was serious concern that the 3,500-home community would disrupt the natural ecosystem in the area, and that local residents would find themselves inundated with unwelcome guests.
The development plan has since been scuttled as the result of a $20 million deal that will see the tract of land maintained as a buffer for the local bat population. The land will not be kept in a fully natural state, but the planned greenways are not seen as a cause for concern.
While the preservation of the land around Bracken Cave may have squashed a potentially lucrative development deal, there’s an economic silver lining to this story: it’s estimated that the voluntary pest control conducted by these flying predators saves area cotton farmers nearly $800,000 per year.
