Viki Makes Major Foray into Latin America; Global Video Streaming Company Launches Spanish Site, Telenovela Genre; Expands Distribution Deal with Netflix in the Region
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 09, 2013 -- Viki, the global TV site powered by fans, makes a major push into Latin America today with the launch of a Spanish-language site (http://www.viki.mx) to support its rapidly growing viewership in the region. The company also announced a new Telenovela genre, which will include telenovelas, popular on-air shows and critically acclaimed TV series from Caracol and Venevision International.
Viki viewership has grown rapidly in Latin America, tripling in the last year and now accounts for more than 25 percent of Viki’s global audience. Top countries include Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina. After English, Spanish is the second most subtitled language on Viki, where its volunteer community of fans have subtitled content into more than 150 languages.
“Our goal has always been to bring global TV to global audiences,” said Tammy H. Nam, Viki’s CMO and General Manager, Americas. “More than 90 percent of our Latin American viewers come to Viki to watch top International TV shows and movies, which they can’t easily access elsewhere. Now, we’re able to introduce Telenovelas to much of the world.”
As part of its strategy to make global TV accessible to anyone and on any platform, Viki is also expanding its distribution deal with Netflix to include a selection of Asian TV shows and movies for the Latin America region with subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese.
Over the next few weeks, Viki will add shows from Caracol, the top network in Colombia, and Venevision, a top broadcaster in Venezuela. Viewers in the United States, Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and select countries in Latin America will enjoy popular telenovela titles like on-air TV series like “La Promesa,” worldwide hit “Eva Luna” and the critically acclaimed show “Pablo Escobar, The Drug Lord.”
Viki plans to launch other localized versions of its site worldwide in the coming months.
