Villanova’s Dr. Moeness Amin Honored by Institution of Engineering and Technology
Villanova, PA (PRWEB) September 21, 2016 -- Moeness Amin, PhD, director of the Center for Advanced Communications (CAC) and professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 2016 Achievement Medal. IET Achievement Medals are awarded to individuals who have made major and distinguished contributions in the various sectors of science, engineering and technology, covering energy, transport, manufacturing, information and communications, and the built environment. Winners are nominated by their peers and selected by a panel of IET judges. Dr. Amin’s award reflects his outstanding achievements and seminal contributions to signal analysis and processing over the past three decades.
The medal citation reads: “Dr. Amin has led the development of through-the-wall radar imaging for civilian and defense applications, enabling detection, tracking and classification of animate and inanimate targets behind walls and inside enclosed structures using full and compressed data observations. He pioneered anti-jam GPS techniques that allow accurate user positioning and velocity estimation in hostile environments. His work in wireless communications has led to improved quality of service in both cellular systems and wideband communication signal platforms through advances in interference mitigation, space-time coding, and cooperative diversity.”
The IET is based in United Kingdom and is one of the world’s largest engineering institutions with more than 167,000 members in 150 countries. It is also the most interdisciplinary—to reflect the increasingly diverse nature of engineering in the 21st century.
Dr. Amin expressed his delight in receiving the Achievement Medal: “I am thrilled to have been named a recipient of this award! Knowing that nominations are considered in broad engineering disciplines from academia as well as industry, from the UK and from all over the world, makes it even more rewarding.”

This is Dr. Amin’s second international honor in 2016. Earlier this year Germany’s prestigious Humboldt Prize was added to his impressive list of accolades. In addition to the IET Achievement Medal, Dr. Amin is the recipient of three technical achievement awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2014, EURASIP in 2009, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 2010. Dr. Amin also was awarded the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the 2015 IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society Warren D. White Award for “Excellence in Radar Engineering,” and the 2010 Chief of Naval Research Challenge Award. In addition to his awards, Dr. Amin is a Fellow of four societies: the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE), the IET, and the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP). Other honors include being the first faculty in Villanova’s College of Engineering to receive the University’s Outstanding Faculty Research Award in 1997, being named an IEEE Signal Processing Society distinguished lecturer in 2003-2004, and chairing the electrical cluster of the Franklin Institute Committee on Science and the Arts.
