Vivid Learning Systems Offers a Customizable Version of University of California’s Online Laboratory Safety Fundamentals Training Program

Under the guidance of UC’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Vivid Learning Systems helped the institution convert existing content for online delivery. Vivid Learning Systems, known for its best-in-class safety and regulatory courseware, also helped ensure all regulatory references included throughout the program were up-to-date. The result was a web-based safety training program delivering on-demand accessibility to laboratory safety instruction. Offering the program on-demand allows new researchers, students and faculty to have the proper safety training prior to having access to the research lab, while also providing the existing population with an option for refresher training and just-in-time knowledge.
In early 2012, the University of California began a comprehensive review of its laboratory safety program championed by Erike Young and Ken Smith, EH&S Director and Laboratory Safety Manager for the UC system. The result was the development of systemwide policies on laboratory safety focusing on personal protective equipment and laboratory safety training. With the implementation of a new systemwide laboratory safety training policy and over 40,000 researchers and lab personnel who are required to complete the training; the University of California needed an on-demand online method to deliver the training.
“In developing the laboratory safety fundamentals course, our goal was to go beyond minimum regulatory requirements to develop a course that lays a solid foundation for a laboratory safety culture throughout the UC system. We also understood that other universities may benefit from our time and effort to develop a comprehensive program, so the course was developed to allow other institutions to simply customize portions of the training,” said Young.
University of California jointly owns the content with Vivid Learning Systems, Young announced to Chemical & Engineering News on August 26, 2013.
The Laboratory Safety Fundamentals course can be customized to meet the brand identity and organization specific information of any university or college.
