VNA Health Group’s Prevention Resource NetworkOpens LGBTQ Youth Outreach Center in Asbury Park, NJ
Asbury Park, NJ (PRWEB) January 29, 2014 -- The Prevention Resource Network, a program of the VNA Health Group opened Project REAL (Real Empowerment on All Levels), a drop in center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens, in Monmouth County, NJ on January 9th. Project REAL will provide a safe place where teens and young adults can support each other and receive HIV & AIDS education and prevention.
Project REAL will serve Monmouth County residents between ages 13-26; an age group that has a high prevalence of HIV. The drop in center is currently open four days a week and will provide support groups, game nights, movie nights, cooking and self-defense classes as well as computer access with wireless internet connection.
“Although many young adults are feeling more community support in the coming out process, stigma still exists. This drop in center will provide a place where young adults can develop a sense of community and belonging while getting essential education about HIV prevention,” said Shannon Preston, VNA Health Group Manager, Prevention and Treatment.
Project REAL is located at 805 Fourth Avenue in Asbury Park. The current hours are Mondays 11AM-6PM; Tuesdays & Thursdays 2PM-9PM and Saturdays 12PM-4PM.
The Prevention Resource Network is funded by a grant from the Department of HIV, STD and TB Services. The goal of the program is to assist HIV negative and HIV positive individuals achieve overall health outcomes.
