Vying for Freedom in Sri Lanka: Young Author Malavi Sivakanesan Finds Her Voice
Oslo, Norway (PRWEB) January 22, 2014 -- As the war between the Libertarian Tigers of Eelam and the military of Sri Lanka intensified in early 2009, Malavi Sivakanesan and the youth of Tamil Eelam began to speak out. After writing letters to the Sri Lankan government and participating in worldwide demonstrations, Sivakanesan decided to get her message out by writing a memoir.
Sivakanesan’s book “Was I a Stranger in My Homeland?” shares her journey as young girl striving to understand her identity in a multicultural society. Readers follow Sivakanesan as she searches for freedom and peace for the Tamils in Sri Lanka.
“This book is about my identity and cultural differences- what it’s like to be a Tamil inside the four walls at home, but an integrated Norwegian the minute I step out,” Sivakanesan said.
The story begins with eight-year-old Sivakanesan detailing the harsh reality of the Tamil people, and unfolds into profound anecdotes about pain, struggle, romance and hope.
Sivakanesan, a student and passionate activist, hopes to shed light on the issues facing her homeland and inspire readers to join in the fight for justice.
“My aim with this book is to make the international community aware of the situation in a small island called Sri Lanka. I want to make a difference,” Sivakanesan said.
