While Stratford and its people struggle to survive, Thomas faces personal tragedy when Emma dies, leaving him with six young children. Thomas returns to England and marries Katherine, and they return to Stratford. For the remainder of his life, Thomas would be instrumental in laying the foundation for what would one day become the United States.
