Wakefield College Shortlisted for Prestigious Education Award
Wakefield, MA (PRWEB UK) 18 December 2013 -- Staff and students at Wakefield College were in celebratory mood today after they were shortlisted for a prestigious education award. The College is in the running for a Times Educational Supplement (TES) FE Award for its contribution to the local community.
The College’s Assistant Principal for Inclusion and Partnerships, Jo Simister, put forward the Wakefield Children’s University (WCU) programme for nomination.
Children’s University, which is spearheaded by Wakefield College, aims to encourage children to develop a love of learning beyond the classroom. Children collect stamps for each hour of learning they complete either in after-school activities or at one of the many affiliated Learning Destinations (such as Theatre Royal Wakefield, The Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield Wildcats and Wakefield One) across the region.
Wakefield Children’s University, which was launched in February 2012, has been a monumental success with over 2500 school pupils from over 21 schools across the District taking part so far, racking up over 21,000 learning hours in total.
Wakefield Children’s University has created a network of learning links between pupils, schools and their communities. The jewel in the crown of the first year of operation was a graduation ceremony at Theatre Royal, Wakefield, for 70 students from Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 in front of an audience of over 300 people from the Wakefield District.
Jo Simister, Assistant Principal, said: “I’m delighted that Wakefield College has been shortlisted for a TES Award in recognition of our work in leading Wakefield Children’s University. The backing that Wakefield CU has received from local schools and Learning Destinations has been phenomenal and has brought to life the shared commitment to raising the Further and Higher Education aspirations of the children and young people of Wakefield.”
Winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony held in London next February where the great and good from the education sector and Government ministers will be in attendance to announce the winners in a number of different categories.
