Hawk suggests first determining each partner’s desired role. Are both cooks partners in meal preparation, or is there one head cook and one assistant? Is one person more interested in chopping up a salad while the other prefers baking? Figuring out kitchen roles can help each person feel more comfortable and confident, and make a difference in how you set up your kitchen.
Common challenges to cooking with a partner in the kitchen:
1. Not enough counter space
2. Aisles aren’t wide enough to comfortably pass by
3. The “kitchen triangle” does not work for two people (hard to move between the sink, the range and the refrigerator)
4. When dishwasher door opens, it blocks the path between island and counter
Hawk offers the following layout and design solutions:
1. Create a designated work space for each person
2. Assign specific roles, so each is working alongside (not on top of) one another
3. For any future kitchen remodels, consider adding a second prep sink
4. Relax. And remember the dishes can wait until morning!
