Washington D.C. Decriminalizes Marijuana
Denver, CO (PRWEB) July 24, 2014 -- In a recent report by CBS News, the district capital of the United States has officially put an end to criminal penalties associated with possession of small amounts of marijuana. The legislation marks a new era for marijuana reform in Washington DC, giving it one of the most tolerant marijuana laws in America. The new law replaces criminal penalties for possession of one ounce of marijuana or less with a $25 fine. Growing, selling and the possession of more than an ounce of marijuana remain criminal offenses under the new law.
In a statement to CBS News, the White House said that the marijuana amendment undermines states' rights and "poses legal challenges to the Metropolitan Police Department's enforcement of all marijuana laws currently in force in the District." Under this new law, the Metropolitan Police Department will adhere to state law as opposed to capital law, an issue that has been in a heated debate throughout the country's legalized cannabis market.
City officials are not particularly happy about the new legislation and according to CBS sources, are doing everything they can do to fight the new ordinance. Some are even calling for a boycott of the Senator’s district and vacation spot, who initiated the new bill in the first place.
A representative for A&A Packaging commented on the situation and noted that “keeping marijuana illegal only puts more hardship on taxpayers, who always get stuck with the burden of dealing with marijuana laws that can adversely affect peoples lives, worse than drug itself could ever inflict.” A&A Packaging believes in the notion of state’s rights and the idea that the federal government should let states regulate the affairs of local government.
