Water Expert Sharon Kleyne Discusses Daily Winter Eye Care Routine For Optimal Vision Health
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) February 25, 2016 -- Human eyes, unlike other organs of the body, are almost completely exposed to the external environment. Eyes are protected only by an extremely thin membrane and a “tear film” that is only a few microns thick and consists of 99 percent water and one percent oil, salt and protein. Because eyes are largely unprotected, they may be the body’s most vulnerable organ to the external environment. Water and health advocate Sharon Kleyne will offer tips for protecting the eyes and maintaining eye health, some of which listeners might not have heard before, on an upcoming radio show.

Winter is especially difficult for eye health, says Kleyne, because cold air tends to be extremely dry and windy, both of which can deplete the eyes’ natural tear film moisture content. Indoor winter air, with forced air heating and insulated walls and windows are also dehydrating to eyes. Since the eye surface is 99 percent water, maintaining tear film water content is critical.
Standard eye care tips, according to Kleyne, include getting an annual eye exam, not smoking, wearing sunglasses to prevent glare and resting the eyes periodically. Also, eat a healthy diet (dark green leafy vegetables, omega-3 foods, yellow and red vegetables and carrots) and get at least seven hours sleep a night. Since the unprotected eyes offer an easy entry for viruses and bacteria, do not touch the eyes if hands are not clean.
Since computers are becoming one of the most common causes of eye discomfort and dry eye syndrome, doctors recommend the “20-20-20 rule”: Rest your eyes every 20 minutes, for at least 20 seconds, by looking at an object at least 20 feet away.
Kleyne’s additional recommendations:
Be aware of eye discomfort, which might signal the need to either see a doctor or double down on the daily vision care routine.
Make a concerted effort to reduce stress. Since four of the first six cranial nerves involve vision and eye function, and only the Optic and Olfactory nerves originate directly in the brain, vision is closely associated with all aspects of brain function, including emotions and stress. Dry eye syndrome is known to increase stress levels. Is the opposite also true, that reducing stress will improve eye health? While unproven, Kleyne believes it is possible.
The final and most important suggestion: Keep eyes humidified, especially in cold, dry or windy weather, or when indoors in winter. Humidifying is achieved either by increasing room humidity, drinking adequate daily water or humidifying the eyes with a pure water mist.
Kleyne recommends drinking eight glasses of water per day, in addition to all other fluid intake. This should include four full glasses drunk all at once rather than sipped, the first two glasses upon rising. Avoid sugar, caffeine, alcohol and carbonation which are dehydrating. People under 100 pounds should drink half their body weight in ounces per day.
