Sandy, UT. (PRWEB) March 24, 2016 -- Two students from The Waterford School will display their independent research at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) on May 8-13 in Phoenix, Arizona. Waterford sophomore Tanisha Martheswaran and senior Yang Yan were awarded two of eight Intel ISEF Grand Champion prizes at the Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair (SLVSEF) on March 17.
Martheswaran and Yan competed in the SLVSEF Senior Division, which included 46 entries from high school students in the greater Salt Lake area. The SLVSEF fair is one of seven Intel ISEF-affiliated regional science fairs in Utah. The SLVSEF is presented by The Center for Science and Mathematics Education located at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Yan, who partnered with Annie Yun of West High, won first place in the SLVSEF Physics, Astronomy, & Math category for their project titled, “Mathematical and Computational Modeling and Simulation of Viral Evasions of Integrated Cellular Stress Response.”
Matheswaran won second place in the SLVSEF Energy: Chemical & Physical category for her project titled, “Waste Embraced: Addressing the issue of fossil fuel depletion through the optimization of biogas production using an eco-genomics framework.” Matheswaran was a Grand Champion alternate at SLVSEF, which qualifies her to present her research at Intel ISEF, but not be eligible for prizes.
“It was an extremely stiff competition this year, and I am really lucky to have been chosen to travel and participate,” said Matheswaran following the SLVSEF competition. “I think Intel ISEF will be an amazing experience and I am really looking forward to it.”
Intel ISEF is the world’s largest pre-college science fair. Last year, approximately 1,700 high school students from over 75 countries competed for $4 million in prizes. According to the Society for Science, Intel ISEF unites today’s top young scientific minds, showcasing their talents on an international stage, where doctoral level scientists review and judge their work.
