We Want Your Blood—Local Chiropractor Dr. Josh Rowell and Chicago Spine and Joint Care Are Sponsoring a Blood Drive at Their Downtown Office Location
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 25, 2013 -- Nothing ghoulish going on here. Even though Halloween will have been long over by November 13, 2013, Dr. Josh Rowell and Chicago Spine and Joint Care will be asking for your blood. They will be sponsoring a blood drive along with Heartland Blood Centers from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM in the conference room of the West Jackson building.
"This is a trial run," said Dr. Rowell. "It’s the first time we have tried a blood drive. I see this as a good way to put our efforts toward a great cause and a great way to help our community." Heartland Blood Centers requires a minimum of 20 donors for an on-site mobile blood drive like this. Given Chicago Spine and Joint Care’s office location in the West Jackson building—which has a daytime working population of around 2,000 people—this seems like a very achievable goal.
While this may be the first time that Chicago Spine and Joint Care has attempted a blood drive, it’s not the first time Dr. Josh Rowell has had experience with donating blood or seeing the need for blood donations. Dr. Rowell has family members who have been the recipients of blood transfusions and sees giving blood as a personal responsibility. He hopes that others, on a regular basis, will think of those who need blood and will help make this blood drive not only a success but a routine event. "I hope to get a great turnout not only from our building, but also from the nearby professional community and my contacts in the area."
Heartland Blood Centers is an independent, not-for-profit organization serving 49 hospitals in a 12 county area, including Kane, McHenry, DeKalb, Will, DuPage, Cook, Grundy, Kendall, Lee, Ogle and LaSalle counties in Illinois, and Lake county in Indiana. The Centers work toward a goal of collecting more than 200,000 units of blood each year.
Giving blood is important. According to the American Red Cross, 1 pint of blood can save up to 3 lives. Someone needs a blood transfusion every 2 seconds. Five million patients in the US need blood every year. Less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood. Blood can’t be manufactured; it can only come from volunteer donors. Platelets (which are critical for cancer patients) have a shelf life of only 5 days. "I am thankful for everyone who gives blood," said Dr. Rowell. "I know how important our blood reserve is from personal experience in my family."

Dr. Rowell said, "Our office’s downtown Chicago location is a big part of what makes it so convenient for our patients to come in and see us during the day. Hopefully, it will help to make this blood drive successful too." Although appointments are preferred, walk-ins are also welcome. Donors will need to bring a photo ID and should remember to eat a good meal and drink plenty of water beforehand. Every donor will also receive a free t-shirt.
Donors can schedule an appointment at the front desk of Chicago Spine and Joint Care, by sending an email directly to Dr. Rowell at chicagospinecare(at)gmail(dot)com, or by using Heartland Blood Centers’ online appointment system.
