Weave: Interactive Storytelling Game from Former Goldieblox Designers Launches November 17th
SEATTLE (PRWEB) October 19, 2017 -- Today Monocle Society is pleased to announce that we will be launching our new game Weave on November 17th at PAX Unplugged. This is a groundbreaking new storytelling game for casual gamers using modern technology. Weave was worked on primarily by Brianna Johnson and Kyle Kinkade.
Brianna Johnson has been a designer and creative director in the tech industry for the past 10 years. She helped with physical design at Apple, then moved over to Goldieblox, which focuses on STEM engineering toys for girls.
During her time with Goldieblox, Brianna also met Kyle Kinkade, where they worked together on Goldieblox and the Movie Machine, Best of 2014 for the App Store for Kid’s apps, and also helped bring Goldieblox on stage at 2015’s WWDC conference.
Kyle has been a mobile game designer and developer since the launch of the app store, with over 10 featured titles (such as Tap Tap Revenge) and 500 million downloads to his name.
After the release of Goldieblox and the Movie Machine, Brianna teamed up with Kyle to make app-enhanced board games, with the premise that with technology, they can make games that are easier to learn, and more inclusive to untapped audiences. Weave is the result of such an approach, taking an older style of game like pen and paper RPGs, making it less about violence and fantasy, and more about storytelling that can be appreciated by everyone.
With just two decks of cards and a handful of dice, you and your friends can create adventures in any genre, from sci-fi to high school comedy. When combined with the free companion app, Weave provides all the power you'll need to discover new worlds, imagine amazing characters, and save your stories online in minutes.
“I wanted Weave to feel like something that would have been treasured by the kids from Stranger Things while still managing to look dramatically fresh and different from all other existing tabletop roleplaying games.” Says Brianna. “It had to be fantastical, fun, and sophisticated in order to fit the broad target user-base for Weave. I drew inspiration from the boldness of late 70’s and early 80’s-era graphics and gave them the refined angularity of Art Deco. A sort of Milton Glaser meets Apple, if you will.”
When asked what Weave means to her, Brianna replies “Weave has been a passion project for me, really. This was my first time, as a professional, to have been trusted with such complete and unprecedented creative control over a project, freedom that allowed me to produce exactly the type of role-playing game I myself would buy. And, that’s exactly what I did. As a child of the 80’s and a bonafide Pop Culture nerd, the entire journey of this product has been both a trip down nostalgia lane and a creative’s dream.”
To achieve this, Monocle Society used its knowledge of app development, user experience, and game design to create a roleplaying system that focuses on light rules, and features a brand new style of storytelling, through game design and machine learning. The result is a game that gets casual gamers up and going with their own unique characters and plot in minutes.
Weave will be available for the holiday season on http://www.weave.game and select retailers. All stories and rules reside in our free app, available for iOS and Android. Additional worlds and featured are planned past the initial release of Weave. “We want Weave to be a living rules system and platform,” says Kyle, “not just static information on a shelf in a game store.”
Weave’s first story settings (we call them playsets)
- Xorte/IO: A cyberpunk adventure from the distant future.
- Clique: A high school drama in the style of John Hughes or Mean Girls
- Solar Age: A space adventure in the style of 1950s pulp science fiction
- Gloomies: Every 80s Kids movie trope shoved into a small town
