When it comes to your web rankings, many people try to do everything they can to rank as high as possible. If someone said you could post a picture of your kitchen sink to your site to boost rankings thousands probably would. With all of that information available about what you should worry about in relation to your rankings with Google, is all of it even accurate? Today the NY based web design company, Lounge Lizard, debunks 7 Things that Don't Affect Rankings with Google.
1. Likes and shares. While your marketing department might be elated if you have 10,000 likes for a Facebook post it will honestly have zero direct impact on your rankings. Google simple doesn't track or utilize things such as likes, shares, tweets, plus-ones, or any other type of social endorsement. On the other hand, those likes can lead to activities which Google does track such as browser and search activity, but that is very difficult to predict and next to impossible to plan for. What this means is that while having likes and shares are nice, it is not worth buying them if you are trying to do so as a way to directly increase rankings.
2. Using Google apps or services. Some people are under the mistaken impression that using or not using the various Google apps and/or services will have an influence on your rankings; they don't. Using Yahoo for email rather than Gmail is not going to cause Google to downgrade your website simply because you registered the domain using a '@yahoo' address versus '@gmail'. On the same note, they won't be looking at your AdSense earnings to decide if your rankings deserve a boost. The existing search algorithm already has enough valuable rankings factors to work with.
3. Length of content. There has been confusing, especially in the past few years, about length of content. Some people craft 600 word posts deciding that is an optimal size to be easily digestible. More recently the 1000+ word count has become popular in an effort to provide more detailed information. The truth of the matter is that the actual amount of content is less important than what that content does. Specifically if you are answering the needs of the user, such as providing the exact answer or information they are looking for, then the length of that content is perfect whether it is 200 words or 2000. The behavior of the users will indicate if the content successfully met their needs, which is the primary concern versus how many words it took to get there. Now outside of rankings you might determine that your particular audience prefers a certain length of content to digest, but that has to do with learning about the preferences of your target audience rather than a particular length geared directly towards obtaining better rankings.
4. Headlines and headers. Best practices in HTML are fairly specific in regards to how you should use headlines along with H1, H2, etc tags. However, does Google really care that much? Based on testing the answer is no. Google will make a decision themselves based on the content and spacing as to what is a headline versus a sub-headline without overanalyzing that aspect of your HTML code. With that being said, following best practices is always advised.
5. Website hosting. Does it matter if you use GoDaddy or BlueHost to handle your hosting needs compared to other more expensive options? The name or cost of the host means absolutely nothing to your rankings. What matters are load speed and the up time of your website. As long as those metrics meet or exceed current standards then you are fine.
6. Website programming. Will using older tech affect your rankings? Generally speaking no it will not. As long as Google can crawl your site and find your high-quality content, which is the same content visitors find, then what you use to power your site is immaterial.
7. Website age. Newer is better, right? While in some cases that is true, as far as Google is concerned the age of your website is completely irrelevant. What they care about is the value of the information you are providing to customers along with the level of authority with which you operate within your niche. Age is just a number that doesn't relate to the rankings of your site.
