Webinar Focuses on Hydrotherapy as Safer Modality for Athletes Facing ACL Reconstruction Rehab
Middletown, PA (PRWEB) January 11, 2016 -- Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which runs across the knee in a diagonal direction, is a fairly commonplace surgery, especially among athletes who put tremendous stress on their lower bodies while performing. According to the well-regarded American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine, about 150,000 ACL injuries happen yearly. Of these injuries, many will require surgical interventions, after which comes intensive rehabilitation. Knowing that those with ACL problems are 15 times more likely to face other ACL injuries within a 12-month period of their original accident than those who have not gone through ACL reconstruction, the type of rehab modalities utilized post-surgery are critical. One of the modalities that is getting increasing attention is hydrotherapy in a specially-engineered therapy pool with underwater treadmill and resistance jets.
Ryan Bitzel, MPT, the Rehabilitation Coordinator for the San Diego Padres, regularly uses aquatic therapy to assist professional baseball players recovering from ACL reconstruction surgery, as well as other surgical procedures and injuries. Through his position with the Padres, which he has held for six seasons, he has been able to use his extensive knowledge of the human anatomy and put into play a series of rehab protocols to enhance their return to play. In conjunction with HydroWorx, the leading manufacturer of aquatic therapy pools and products, he will be presenting a webinar on Thursday, January 14, 2016, from 1-2 p.m. E.S.T., “The Use of Hydrotherapy in the Rehabilitation of Professional Athletes Post-ACL Reconstruction.”
Bitzel’s webinar will focus on his own experiences in his current capacity, defining why aquatic therapy is beneficial to those coming back from knee surgeries. As part of “The Use of Hydrotherapy in the Rehabilitation of Professional Athletes Post-ACL Reconstruction,” he will demonstrate the exercises he uses to combat the common neurological and muscular deficits that can happen to those who have been through ACL reconstruction. Although Bitzel regularly works with professional baseball players, and the webinar will focus on baseball case studies, the content is pertinent to anyone working with ACL rehabilitation.
