West Palm Beach Car Accident Lawyer David Glatthorn Comments on Report about Proposed Speed Limit Increase
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) January 23, 2014 -- Commenting on a news story about a measure to increase speed limits across Florida, West Palm Beach car accident lawyer David J. Glatthorn said today that raising speed limits may only encourage careless motorists to drive faster.
Glatthorn commented on a report by Naples News (“Safety advocates object to Florida raising highway speed limit,” December 26, 2013). According to the report, safety advocates across the state anticipate that raising Florida highway speed limits by 5 miles per hour could potentially lead to an increase in 100 traffic fatalities per year across the state.
“Speeding is a major problem in Florida and high-speed collisions result in countless fatalities each year across the state,” Glatthorn said. “As a personal injury lawyer with more than 30 years’ experience, I have seen first-hand the devastating impact of these types of accidents. I hope lawmakers carefully weigh the concerns of safety advocates before signing off on the legislation.”
According to the Naples News report, proposed changes to Florida speed limits would allow the Florida Department of Transportation (DoT) to increase speed limits on limited access highways to 75 miles per hour and maximum posted limits on divided, four-lane highways in rural areas from 65 to 70 miles per hour. Additionally, the DoT could increase speeds to 65 miles per hour on roads they deem to be safe.
According to Naples News, safety advocates believe that these proposed changes will make roads less safe. Advocates told Naples News that, according to studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in Arlington, VA, speeding accident fatalities have actually increased in states with increased speed limits across the country.
Furthermore, the article said that a 2009 study by the American Journal of Public Health found a three percent increase in speeding fatalities after the national speed limit was repealed in 1995, including a nine percent increase on rural interstates.
“While this measure is being debated, I encourage all drivers to operate safely. Observe the speed limit and avoid distractions,” Glatthorn said. “If you or a loved one is injured or killed in a speeding accident, you should seek the advice of legal counsel. An attorney may be able to help you get compensation and closure and send a message that careless or reckless behavior won’t be tolerated on Florida roads.”
