West Street School Kids Joined the Reuse Movement With Community Recycling
Fairless Hills, PA (PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- The Granby PTO has found a way to make all the parents and caregivers of the students at the West Street School in Granby, Massachusetts happy—they got them to clean their rooms! Working with Community Recycling, a for-profit clothing recycler, they signed up for CR Kids, a unique and innovative clothing recycling program designed to promote recycling and connect classrooms around the world. CR Kids were motivated and learned quickly that it was in the best interest of the environment to ‘Join the Reuse Movement’ and bag up the goods that are no longer needed or used.
CR Kids is truly about People Recycling for People. Community Recycling has developed a fully integrated educational and fun clothing collection that supports REUSE and allows kids to learn about diverse cultures around the globe. This environmental service project promotes sustainability, geography, social studies, language, and art with fun educational activities and curriculum. The more clothes, bags, belts and shoes collected and packed into the PODS container, the more funds and rewards schools can earn. Classrooms here in the US connect with classrooms around the globe, literally bringing communities closer via Community Recycling’s collaboration with Skype In the Classroom.
Andrea Kennedy of the Granby PTO was determined to fill her PODS container within the first weekend. She used the marketing tools provided by CR Kids to help raise the bar on awareness and to help educate young recyclers. Students and their families came in droves! Those avid ambassadors of reuse managed to collect 7,876 pounds of clothes, shoes, purses, wallets, belts, linens, bedding and back packs. With the progressive rewards program that CR Kids offers, students earned a Certificate for Reuse, a one-of-a-kind, handmade global map made from recycled materials, CR Kids Badges and a $100.00 Visa Gift card. Additionally, they did a phenomenal job on fundraising, earning $787.60.
“We already have our spring CR Kids collection set up for our little town of Granby, 6,500 strong in population!” said Andrea. “I am positive we will far surpass the 10,000 pound threshold, earning the iPad and school connection since we are already so close.” Andrea continued, “Our students are eager to meet up with students across the globe and learn more about the people and the world around us.”
Last spring, a school in NE Philly won all the rewards listed above, along with an iPad. They were able to connect with an elementary school in Tunisia where there collection of clothes went. Students shared thoughts and ideas, asked questions of each other, and felt the power that human connection offers.
“Pulling all the pieces together and getting the students to understand how their actions can really make a meaningful impact on others is what CR Kids is all about, said Lisa Pomerantz, VP of Marketing and Business Development at Community Recycling. “When we are able to connect kids here to the places their clothing goes, it truly widens the eyes and minds of students on all sides of the globe.”
