Western Refining and MDA Join Forces to Help Send Kids with Muscle Disease to Summer Camp
PHOENIX, AZ (PRWEB) April 28, 2015 -- More than 260 Western Refining convenience stores, including Giant, Mustang, Sun Dial and Howdy’s, throughout the Southwest will raise money to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association save and improve the lives of kids fighting muscular dystrophy and related life-threatening diseases by participating in the MDA Summer Camp mobile program.
From April 28 through June 8, Western Refining convenience stores located throughout Arizona, southwest Colorado, New Mexico and southwest Texas will sell $1 and $5 pin-up mobiles that offers each customer the opportunity to help send local children affected by neuromuscular diseases to a week where anything is possible at MDA summer camp – all at no cost to their families.
“The MDA summer camp mobile program is a simple way for Western Refining employees and customers to make a real difference in the lives of people affected by muscle disease right here in our local communities," said R.C. Sprouse, Western Refining vice president – retail. "We are proud to know that each mobile sold will help fuel the fight against these devastating diseases and help give kids a chance to experience the independence of being away from home in an environment where barriers don’t exist at MDA summer camp.”
During the program, customers who add a $5 mobile to their purchase at checkout will receive a special coupon for a free 20-ounce Pepsi product as a thank you for helping MDA families and supporting the 60th anniversary of MDA’s summer camp program. Many participating stores will often creatively display the purchased mobiles on their ceilings and walls, visually declaring steadfast support to help those affected by muscle disease get stronger and live longer.
“MDA summer camp is often considered ‘the best week of the year’ for our kids, and it wouldn’t be possible without support from partners like Western Refining and its generous customers and employees," said MDA Executive Traci McMillan. "It is with their help that we are able to support the families we serve and provide some amazing kids with life-changing camp experiences where they can build self-confidence and develop independence, and carry those skills and experiences into adulthood.”
This is the fourth year Western Refining has supported MDA through its mobile fundraising programs, raising nearly $1 million to help accelerate urgently needed progress for people whose abilities to move are compromised — including everyday abilities like walking, running, hugging, talking and even breathing.
Last year, more than $379,053 was raised through summer camp mobile donations. This year’s goal is set at $425,000.
In addition to giving kids with muscle disease a week of awesome adventures, dollars raised from the mobile program also help MDA push science to its limits in the search for treatments and cures, and support MDA’s life-enhancing programs such as state-of-the-art clinics and support groups.
