When it comes to fitness, Americans ‘talk the talk’ more than they ‘walk the walk’ nearly half of the time, according to TomTom survey
Burlington, Massachusetts (PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- Americans are spending 43 percent of their workout time *not* actually working out, according to a new report from TomTom.
TomTom surveyed 1,000 people from across the country, to see how many “gym rats” are falling flat when it comes to their workout regimen. 33.1 percent admit that when exercising, they don’t work out as hard as they intended.
The rest of the time, 18.6 percent are chatting with friends, 15.4 percent are watching other people exercise or play sports, 8 percent are relaxing by the pool, and 7 percent are relaxing in the sauna.
“Distractions make it extremely difficult to concentrate on your workout,” said Jocelyn Vigreux, Vice President of TomTom Inc. “TomTom’s GPS sport watches make it possible to easily monitor your progress, and sometimes that’s all it takes to get you motivated and moving.”
77.7 percent of Americans believe it’s actually commonplace for people to exaggerate the amount and quality of their exercise.
It’s all about feeling good about themselves, and 67.6 percent say they feel a sense of pride to be able to say they went to a gym even if they didn’t work out that hard.
Many find creative ways to “fudge it” when talking to family, friends and even their doctors.
25.9 percent say they “slightly exaggerate” how much exercise they are doing when they go to the doctor.
20.2 percent actually count spending time in the sauna or steam room as “going to the gym.”
And the lengths that some people go to on exercise machines might raise an eyebrow or two.
The good news is that people are trying. According to a CDC report in July 2014, only one in four Americans are not voluntarily exercising. In addition, just over half of those surveyed in the report meet the CDC’s 150-minute weekly guideline for aerobic activity.
32.3 percent of respondents in the TomTom survey believe they would be more likely to work harder and not fake it when they exercise if they used a GPS sport watch to track their progress.
