Whey Protein Consumption Helps With Blood Glucose Control In Diabetics By Promoting Insulin Response
(PRWEB UK) 24 July 2014 -- Whey protein is an increasingly common dietary supplement consumed by sports enthusiasts and athletes to aid muscle repair and growth. Until now, whey protein has had a rather limited consumer market. However, groundbreaking scientific research has revealed that whey protein helps with blood glucose control in diabetics by promoting an insulin response. The research was published in the Journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes through the collaboration of professors at Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Lund Univeristy (1).
The study revealed that consuming whey protein before a meal will help to control and reduce the large spike in blood sugar that occurs in diabetics after a meal. It was also found that whey protein consumption helped to improve the body’s physiological responses to insulin to make glucose handling more effective in diabetics. This landmark study has great implications in helping to treat diabetics and make managing their condition much easier as whey protein would help to better control blood sugar in these patients.
The experimental study involved 15 people with type 2 diabetes. The participants were instructed to consumer 50g whey protein powder dissolved in water. As a control experiment, one group were given a placebo where they only drank water. Following consumption of the whey protein or placebo, both groups were given a high glycaemic-index meal. High-glycaemic index foods are those that are rapidly digested and absorbed to rapidly increase blood glucose concentration. Blood samples were taken before the meal, the point where whey protein was consumed and then at 15 minute intervals once the high glycaemic-index meal was consumed.
The results showed an astonishing and significant difference between the blood glucose spikes of the whey protein trial group and the control group; blood glucose levels were reduced by 28% in the whey protein trial group. Further analysis of the blood samples showed that insulin was 105% higher in the whey protein trial group (2). The proposed mechanism by which whey protein has this effect is through to be through the stimulation of a gut hormone called GLP-1 which is released in response to protein consumption. GLP-1 in turn stimulates insulin release.
Vitamin Planet supple the UK’s highest quality and most pure whey protein supplement, Wheymax (3). It is a hydrolysed whey protein isolate which means that the pure whey protein extract has been partially broken down to aid absorption. Marketing Manager Ryan Malting has commented, “Wheymax is a superior quality whey protein supplement. Since it is the purest product of its kind its effects are even greater and our customers have gained excellent benefits from it.” Wheymax is available to purchase on the VitaminPlanet.com website here: http://www.vitaminplanet.co.uk/wheymax-174-hydrolysed-whey-protein-isolate-p-179097.aspx. The new discovery has placed a great amount of attention on Wheymax as a novel approach to aid management of type 2 diabetes.
