White Paper From BookBrowse Gives New Insights into Book Clubs

KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE
• Book club participation jumps at two life stages - empty nesting and retirement.
• A third of book club members belong to more than one club; one-fifth belong to an online book club.
• Of 14 criteria measured, the most important attributes book clubs look for in books are that they are well written, will provoke good conversation and will be enjoyable.
• 4 out of 10 book clubs choose their books at least four months in advance - a full season or more ahead.
• 80% of book clubs read local authors at least occasionally.
• 75% of Friends of the Library members are in a book club.
• About a quarter of men who read regularly have positive opinions about book clubs but when asked if they had considered joining a group most answered no.
• When asked to describe their ideal book club, the great majority of men interested in joining a book club would like it to be a mix of men and women, and to discuss a variety of genres. About half would prefer to meet in a public place such as a library, only 15% would like to meet in a private home.
