The Commission provides the United Nations General Assembly and Economic and Social Council with high-level advice on relevant science and technology issues. Dr. Mody will be a member of the CSTD panel which will focus on the role of information and communication technologies in development. In particular, the panel will address the role emerging commercial technologies such as whitespace, Wi-FAR™, Wi-Fi and mobile technology can play in digital development. Findings and recommendations of the panel are expected to be considered at length at the 18th session of the CSTD, to be held in May 2015.
“Digital development in global emerging economies requires cost-effective Internet access for both urban and rural areas. Using underutilized spectrum, also known as whitespace, to provide Internet connectivity has created a unique opportunity for bridging today’s digital divide,” said Dr. Apurva N. Mody, Chairman of WhiteSpace Alliance. “Governments should create regulations that support sustainable business models for providing such Internet access. This will not only create the workforces of tomorrow, but also support national initiatives for e-governance, e-health, e-education and e-commerce.”
WhiteSpace Alliance, developer of Wi-FAR™ and WSAConnect™ interoperability specifications, has a following of more than 200 major commercial, academic, government and regulatory organizations around the world. WSA member organizations benefit from access to technical specifications that decrease development costs; expanded access to global markets, regulators and government agencies; and ongoing marketing support at no additional cost.
