Who Says Wax & Fine Art Don't Mix?
Manhattan, New York (PRWEB) July 22, 2016 -- If you thought wax was only used to create crafty candles, you're wrong. Modern encaustic artist Joan Giordano is proving this ancient waxed-based painting technique is alive and well and enjoying a revival. Giordano is highlighted in Schiffer Publication's recently released Encaustic Art in the Twenty-First Century and will be enjoying a solo exhibition at June Kelly Gallery, 166 Mercer St., NYC which opens on September 8, 2016 and will remain on view until October 8, 2016.
Just released, Encaustic Art in the Twenty-First Century features top North American encaustic artists like Giordano, Angel Dean, Bridgette Meinhold, and Jasper Johns. "We are excited to have cataloged and, in some cases, to have discovered encaustic risk-takers and pioneers," said Ashley Rooney one of the co-authors. These artists are not monolithic in their approach but instead use their creative spirit across a variety of disciplines. "The fact that these cross-disciplinary artists, and Joan in particular, continue to gain recognition and exposure is particularly rewarding," said Rooney.
On September 8, June Kelly Gallery will be featuring Giordano's mixed media constructions in a solo exhibition titled: "Woven in Time". "Joan is an established artist whose work has yet to be broadly discovered. I have always believed her oeuvre was impressive and I'm proud to be showing her new work," said Ms. Kelly. As it relates to the exhibition Joan stated: "June has always been a supporter of my work and I'm proud to be represented by such an iconic and historic SoHo gallery."
Giordano has enjoyed more than sixty museum and gallery exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. Her work has been featured in: National Museum of Art, Santiago Chile; Museo del Corso, Florence, Italy; Fiberart International, Pittsburgh PA; Montclair Museum, Montclair NJ; Staten Island Museum, Staten Island NY; American Museum of Papermaking, Atlanta GA; Hammond Museum, North Salem NY; Awagami Museum, Tokushima Japan, and many others.
Giordano was awarded a graduate fellowship to Hunter College and holds an MFA from Pratt Institute where she studied with the abstract expressionist, George McNeil.
