Wildlife Expeditions Named a “Best Friend” for Yellowstone Safari Wolf and Bear Spotting by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine
Jackson Hole, Wyo. (PRWEB) June 15, 2015 -- “This was an America I had dreamed of but didn’t know still existed. An ancient America, one almost untouched by man,” writes Peter Heller in the current issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine of his three-day Wolves & Bears Expedition from Wildlife Expeditions of Teton Science Schools. In the article “On Safari in Yellowstone National Park, America’s Own Serengeti,” Heller chronicles his wildlife viewing – including battling moose, a bathing bald eagle, a rare white trumpeter swan cygnet, an alpha wolf couple with playful pups, and a boar grizzly at full run – while calling his Wildlife Expeditions guide a traveler’s “best friend” for combining a deep knowledge of the “botany, history, geology, and ecology of the Rocky Mountains” with “the sharpest eye for wildlife I’ve ever seen.”
Heller describes the multi-day Yellowstone safari as a search for “’charismatic mega-fauna,’ the term used by biologists to mean … all the marquee mammals we will travel a long way to capture in a photograph. On this trip we would stalk pronghorns, black bears, grizzly bears, elk, buffalo, bighorn sheep, mountain goats. We would try to see a wolf. Wolves are never a given.” But Heller and traveling companions eventually do see wolves in the valley of the Lamar River, which he calls “valley of the wolves,” learning about the U.S. reintroduction of wolves and the resulting positive changes to the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem along the way.
Using Wildlife Expeditions’ Jackson Hole, Wyo., home base as a jumping-off point, the multi-day Wolves & Bears Expedition travels through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks via customized, safari-style vehicles with roof hatches that allow for easy wildlife observation. Daily lunch is included, as well as beverages and snacks throughout the day, high-quality binoculars and spotting scopes, and overnight accommodations adjacent to Yellowstone for easier access to wildlife observation at the dawn and dusk hours, when many animals are on the move.
The Spring Wolves & Bears Expedition Heller experienced is one of a number of multi-day expeditions on offer from Wildlife Expeditions, including the upcoming Fall Elk Bugling, Wolves & Bears Expedition available in September and October 2015 with rates of $999/adult and $785/child. In addition to the Conde Nast Traveler coverage, Wildlife Expeditions’ Wolves & Bears Expedition was named one of “Ten Amazing Adventures for under $1,000” worldwide by USA Today.
