Wilmington Car Accident Lawyer Richard Flexner Comments on Report about School Bus Safety
Wilmington, NC (PRWEB) September 22, 2014 -- Commenting on a recent WNCN article that found an alarming number of drivers ignore school bus safety laws in North Carolina, Wilmington car accident attorney Richard Flexner said today the news report should serve as an urgent reminder for drivers to use extreme caution around buses and in school zones.
Flexner, a Wilmington attorney with over 35 years’ experience, based his comments on an Aug. 25 article, “13 NC kids killed since 1999 by drivers passing school buses.” The WNCN article cited statistics from the North Carolina Department of Public Institution that show 13 children across North Carolina have been killed by drivers illegally passing school buses since 1999.
“Drivers who pass a school bus that has stopped to pick up or drop off children must be held accountable for their actions,” Flexner said. “A serious injury involving a child or the death of a child has such a devastating impact on parents and other loved ones. Drivers know better than to pass a school bus when it is stopped. They may be distracted by their cellphones or they may be impaired by drugs or alcohol. Whatever the reason, it’s shocking to learn that thousands of drivers every day ignore traffic safety laws designed to keep our children safe. North Carolina drivers must change their behavior.”
According to WNCN, the North Carolina Department of Public Institution recorded 3,153 “stop arm” violations over the course of a single day in March. This includes 117 – or an average of over 23 per day – in New Hanover County alone. Statewide, over 800,000 children rely on school buses to be safely transported to and from school, according to the article.
Furthermore, WNCN reported that 13 children have been killed since 1999 because of drivers who ignore “stop arm” rules at bus stops. This includes the death of a 7-year-old Sampson County child in 2013 caused by a truck driver under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, the WNCN article reports.
“Hopefully, public awareness campaigns and tougher law enforcement can reduce the number of drivers who ignore school bus laws,” Flexner said. “There are no excuses for drivers who break laws that are designed to protect our children.”
