Wilmington, NC Car Accident Attorney Richard Flexner Comments on North Carolina “Move Over” Law and Driver Awareness
Wilmington, NC (PRWEB) July 30, 2014 -- A WRAL-TV news report states that most drivers don’t know about the state’s “Move Over” law that protects roadside workers, a finding that troubles North Carolina car accident lawyer Richard Flexner of Richard Flexner Law Offices.
“This is very disturbing, because people’s lives are at risk,” Flexner said. “But fortunately the state will be ramping up awareness of the law. We hope this campaign will lead to a reduction in accident fatalities.”
Flexner based his comments on an article published by WRAL-TV on June 27, “NC DOT promoting 'Move Over' law.” Flexner said that efforts by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) to increase awareness of the law is key to protecting the safety of North Carolina emergency personnel stopped at the side of the road.
“North Carolina’s ‘Move Over’ law has been effect since 2002, yet Department of Transportation data suggests more than 1,400 drivers were cited for violations of this important law in 2013 alone,” Flexner said. “Each of these violations represents a scenario in which a police officer, paramedic, firefighter, or tow truck driver was put in immediate danger. ‘Move Over’ laws exist to protect these important emergency personnel from harm. Any failure to comply with the law could result in a catastrophic accident.”
According to WRAL-TV, the state’s “Move Over” law requires drivers to switch traffic lanes or slow their vehicle down when approaching emergency and public service vehicles. The law was expanded in 2012 to include utility vehicles and road maintenance operations, the article states.
WRAL-TV said the Department of Transportation reported more than 1,400 citations of the “Move Over” law in 2013 alone. In response, WRAL-TV reported the DOT to have launched a safety campaign to remind drivers about the law, including radio advertisements, billboards and reminders on electronic message boards.
“Not knowing the law is no excuse if you are a driver who causes an accident,” Flexner said. “People who don’t move over and injure or kill another person must be held accountable. While these drivers did not mean to hurt anyone, they nevertheless have acted negligently.”
