Wimbledon U Responsible for Saving Student Athletes Lives through Diagnostic Testing: Severe cardiac disorders uncovered through cutting edge testing at D1 Universities
Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) January 19, 2015 -- Wimbledon Health Partners, through its collegiate testing division Wimbledon U, delivers on-site diagnostic testing that provides colleges and universities both vascular imaging and echocardiography. The primary focus in conducting this type of testing is to discover underlying symptoms related to coronary artery disease, Marfan syndrome, sudden cardiac arrest, valve disorders and myocarditis which are leading causes of death among young athletes. In addition, these tests also eliminate false positives that can deem athletes ineligible to play. Utilizing state-of-the-art testing procedures Wimbledon U is leading the way in diagnostic testing for colleges and universities nationwide, while saving young student lives.
Throughout the past year, Wimbledon U has significantly increased its national presence in meeting the demand for quality and convenient diagnostic testing. According to NCAA guidelines, sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the leading cause of death among young athletes, which represents 75 percent of all sudden death cases that occur during training, exercise or competition. Current testing standards for NCAA athletes require a questionnaire, sometimes followed by an EKG, which is a graph depicting the conduction of electricity through the heart muscle. Our testing methodology utilizes echocardiography which produces an image of the heart through sound waves.
Together with our current testing universities, collaborations are proving to be successful as Wimbledon U is in fact uncovering severe cardiac disorders that could have potentially been fatal for the student-athletes. It has been noted that current screening standards have limited potential to detect major cardiac abnormalities. WHP’s clinical testing protocols have proven to be more comprehensive. During testing conducted within the fourth quarter of the year, Wimbledon U identified significant results that may change the landscape of current scientific findings. Of the several hundred student athletes tested through our program, 2 have been identified with critical results requiring further medical intervention. These student-athletes were also deemed ineligible to play due to their cardiac conditions. Additionally, other conditions were uncovered such as hypertension and heart murmurs which were not previously uncovered through pre-participation questionnaire and physical examinations.
This is significant because it exposes a greater need for anatomical visualization standards to be used in diagnostic testing of young athletes.
On-site diagnostic testing is convenient for athletic participants because testing appointments are booked around class and training schedules. Testing is performed in familiar surroundings thereby minimizing stress and anxiety. Most importantly, athletes and their coaches, know exactly where they stand health-wise, in preparation for athletic participation.
“The testing methods used by Wimbledon U exceed methods currently being used by most universities. The convenience of scheduling, testing and reporting allows me and my staff to focus on daily tasks and worry less about their cardiac wellbeing,” commented Jeremy Teblum, Staff Athletic Trainer.
Wimbledon U is steadily expanding their collegiate diagnostic testing at additional NCAA universities across the country. For more information, or to learn how to become a national Affiliate with Wimbledon U, please call (855) 200-8262 or visit http://www.dxtesting.com.
