Windsor Healthcare Facilities Earn Top Grades From CMS; Achieve National Recognition
Norwood, NJ (PRWEB) December 31, 2013 -- For Windsor Healthcare, a family-owned and operated short- and long-term care company with nine facilities in New Jersey, 2013 has been a banner year. Four of its centers were awarded the highest ranking by the federal government, another won a top national landscape architecture award, and a Windsor member took the reins of a statewide organization of long-term care administrators. But Windsor didn’t just earn success – it shared its strategies with other healthcare providers by leading a national seminar on person-centered care.
Recently Llanfair House Care & Rehabilitation Center in Wayne and Cornell Hall Care & Rehabilitation Center in Union joined Buckingham at Norwood Care & Rehabilitation Center in Norwood and Canterbury Care & Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Grove in being recognized for providing the highest quality of care. Each earned Five-Star Quality Ratings from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
These top grades follow other achievements at Windsor Healthcare centers. The Therapy Garden at Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center in Plainsboro was recognized with a Gold Award and selected by Healthcare Design Magazine as the top landscape architecture project in a senior living community in the U.S. for 2013. The garden, which opened last June, uses a nature-filled setting to help people recover from their illnesses.
Buckingham was named one of the “Best Nursing Homes 2013” by U.S. News & World Report, and Windsor Healthcare Vice President Batsheva Katz led a national seminar on the company’s progressive approach to caring for nursing home residents with dementia earlier this year. One of the company’s administrators, Helaine Ledany, was elected president of a statewide organization for long-term care professionals.
In addition, Canterbury and Buckingham Rehabilitation are two of only three nursing home facilities in the state to have been certified as “Eden Alternative” centers. A progressive approach to aging, the Eden Alternative stresses choice and fosters a person-centered approach to care, tailoring treatment and activities to individual needs and preferences under the guidance of interdisciplinary teams. Studies have shown that implementation of the Eden Alternative is a powerful tool for improving quality of life and quality of care for those living in nursing homes. More Eden Alternative certified facilities are on the way for Windsor Healthcare Communities in 2014.
“We are honored to have been in the spotlight for so many good things in 2013,” said Windsor Healthcare President and CEO Hyman Jacobs. “Here at Windsor Healthcare, our teams of administrators, doctors, nurses and all other healthcare professionals who help us serve almost 2,000 residents a day are committed to providing the highest level of care in a loving, nurturing, respectful environment. We work hard to make sure our residents are comfortable, cared for well, and are able to achieve their greatest level of independence possible.”
Among the national recognition Windsor Healthcare’s facilities received in 2013 was the award for the Therapy Garden at Merwick. The therapy garden won the award in the senior care category, which included care facilities, assisted living, continuing care retirement communities, independent living, post-acute/rehabilitation, skilled nursing, wellness/fitness, and other senior living environments. The landscape architecture awards program for healthcare environments recognizes exceptional designs in three specific project categories: acute care, senior care, and behavioral health. The award was presented by the magazine’s publisher, the Vendome Group, in conjunction with The Center for Health Design (CHD) and The Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (SAGE).
This isn’t the first year Windsor Healthcare facilities have achieved recognition. Buckingham was named one of the top “Best Nursing Homes” by U.S. News & World Report in 2011 and 2012 as well. Nevertheless, earning that recognition again in 2013 was gratifying and again demonstrated Windsor Healthcare’s commitment to providing quality care, said Mr. Jacobs.
He noted that Buckingham’s administrator, Helaine Ledany, was elected president of the N.J. Chapter of the American College of Health Care Administrators, the only professional association devoted solely to meeting the professional needs of today’s long-term care administrators and executives.
This same statewide organization honored Ledany with the 2012 American College of Health Care Administrator’s Facility Leadership Award during an April 13 awards luncheon at ACHCA’S Annual Convocation and Exposition in Orlando, FL. Ledany was among recipients nationwide who received the Facility Leadership Award and was recognized by over 300 peers for this prestigious achievement. This annual award recognizes administrators of nursing homes who have met superior health care standards. The selection process of those receiving the award was based on reported skilled nursing facility resident data from the MDS that reflects the care and services provided.
Earlier this year, VP Katz and Emi Kiyota, an environmental gerontologist and a consultant to Windsor Healthcare, led a discussion about the opportunities as well as the challenges in changing the culture in healthcare organizations providing services for the elderly and others who need long-term care. “Let Them Be ... Gaining Control by Letting Go,” was the title of the discussion at the Pioneer Network’s national conference for 1,100 hospital CEOs, nursing home owners and other healthcare executives in Seattle, WA. They offered guidance to for-profit care organizations on how to embrace the person-centered care movement led by the Eden Alternative.
