Winter Bliss on the Adirondack Coast

Downhill Skiing and Riding
Whether its first tracks or last chair, visitors have access to some of the East Coast’s best alpine terrain via the Adirondack Coast. Unpack just once and experience some of the best skiing and riding in the east. The Adirondack Coast is less than an hour drive from Whiteface Mountain with the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies. Known as the Olympic Mountain – having hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games’ – Whiteface offers exciting terrain and world class alpine events. Titus Mountain is ideal for families wanting gentler terrain and beginner glades, and nearby Beartown Ski Area is great for families with small children.
Backcountry Skiing
Wanting to backcountry ski in the Adirondacks is only natural with our terrain and snow. Standing at 3,830’ Lyon Mountain dominates the western sky of the Adirondack Coast. The large massif has long been a draw for backcountry skiers – and for good reason. Owned by New York State, Lyon Mountain, now classified as a “wild forest,” was once home to the Lowenberg Ski Area. Today it has a strong local following for its reputation as a snow pocket. The trail is unmarked but most often ski tracks will lead the way up the 90-minute climb and down the gentle, gladed descent. A separate trail is available for snowshoers in search of the summit with its open views and abandoned fire tour.
Cross Country Skiing
The Adirondack Coast offers Nordic skiers an extensive network of trails, both groomed and natural, in your choice of park or natural setting. In their winter form, local parks and beaches, such as Point au Roche and Ausable Point, offer wonderful opportunities to explore the shoreline or tree-lined routes. Many cross-country ski trails are multi-use and offer snowshoeing tracks.
Snowshoeing
The Adirondack Region boasts more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails, traversing mountain peaks, winding through nature centers and along quiet forest paths. When the snow falls, these trails are transformed, offering incredible snowshoeing opportunities. Natural wonders such as Ausable Chasm, High Falls Gorge and Natural Stone Bridge and Caves along with the New Land Trust offer a unique snowshoeing experience.
Ice Fishing
The winter months on the Adirondack Coast offer some of the year’s best fishing. The ice fishing season typically extends from December to April. Species include northern pike, walleyes, tiger muskies, lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, landlocked salmon and a variety of panfish. Some of the most popular winter destinations in the Adirondacks are Lake Champlain, Chazy Lake and Upper Chateaugay Lake but dozens of smaller waters also offer outstanding winter angling. Ice fishing guides are also available to visitors on the Adirondack Coast.
Snowmobiling
Experience the Adirondack Coast at full throttle. With thousands of miles of snowmobile trails, there is no better way to explore winter’s white landscape than on a sled. Race across frozen Chazy Lake, enjoy a large network of groomed trails in the Adirondacks or cross the border into Canada at Mooers/Hemmingford.
