WISPA Board Member Appointed to FCC Consumer Advisory Committee
Redding, CA (PRWEB) May 05, 2015 -- The Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA), a membership organization that promotes the development, advancement, and unity of the fixed wireless Internet service provider (WISP) industry, today announced that WISPA Vice President, Alex Phillips, has been appointed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve on its Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC).
The purpose of the CAC is to make recommendations regarding consumer issues within the jurisdiction of the Commission and to facilitate the participation of all consumers in proceedings before the Commission. Meetings are open to the public and are broadcast live with open captioning over the Internet from the FCC Live web page.
Alex Phillips has been in the Internet industry since 1995, working from the downtown area of Harrisonburg Virginia. In 2001 he started a fixed wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP) business, Highspeedlink.net, which was the first to bring broadband to rural areas of the Shenandoah Valley. The company deployed in unserved and under-served markets of the Shenandoah Valley spanning three counties. In addition to broadband proliferation, Phillips demonstrated at the National Defense University STAR-TIDES events in the past as well as AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association) to show the benefits of TV white space systems as a way to restore communications after a disaster, anywhere in the world.
Phillips has been a member of the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA) since 2009 and a Board member since 2011. He is also the current Vice President of WISPA and the FCC Committee Chairman of the Association. He primarily works with WISPA staff and other committee members to file comments and adopt change at the FCC regarding regulatory issues that affect the challenges of deploying broadband Internet in rural America.
