Vienna, Virginia (PRWEB) July 11, 2013 -- Aspen Santa Fe Ballet
Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at 8:30 pm
$4-$40

Founded in 1996 as a ballet company, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet quickly developed into a unique, multidimensional arts organization. Combining ballet and modern dance into its contemporary style, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet performs original works from emerging and internationally renowned choreographers. In 2000 the company began operating in both Aspen and Santa Fe, and it offers a variety of arts activities year-round in both cities, including performances, dance classes, presentations, and community outreach. This performance marks Wolf Trap’s second commission with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet and features a world premiere commission created by up-and-coming Julliard graduate Norbert De La Cruz III.

Hip-hop, rock, and folk-influenced reggae band SOJA is making its headlining debut at the Filene Center. Based in Arlington, Virginia, SOJA was founded by childhood friends Jacob Hemphill (lead singer and guitarist) and Bobby Lee Jefferson (bassist) when they recruited some of their friends in high school. They released their first self-titled EP in 2000. In 2002 SOJA released its debut full-length album, but it was 2005’s Get Wiser that brought them recognition when it debuted on the Top 10 Reggae Albums chart on iTunes. In addition to performing more than 150 shows a year for its devoted fan base, SOJA recently released Strength to Survive (2012), which was inspired by Bob Marley’s Survival (1979).

With influences stemming from Celtic, Indian, folk, blues, and reggae music genres, John Butler Trio has found success both in America and their home country of Australia. The band released their debut album John Butler in 1998. Their next record Three (2001) lead to their rise in popularity, peaking at No. 24 on the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) charts. As a result, John Butler Trio’s fan base grew in America, and they toured with Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer. The band most recently released April Uprising (2010), which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Rock Albums chart. John Butler Trio’s current lineup is composed of John Butler (vocals and guitar), Nicky Bomba (drums), and Byron Luiters (bass).

Raised between Washington, D.C. and Augusta, Georgia, singer/songwriter/producer Alice Smith brings her soul tunes and four-octave range to the Filene Center. Known for her rock, blues, and R&B-influenced style, Smith released her debut album, For Lovers, Dreamers & Me, in 2006 and was named one of the Artists to Watch by Rolling Stone that same year. She was nominated for a Grammy for her single “Dream” in the Best Urban/Alternative category in 2007. She released She, her second album, earlier this year.

Named the best movie musical ever made by the American Film Institute, Singin’ in the Rain comes to the Filene Center in a brilliantly restored high-definition version shown on huge screens in-house and on the lawn. The National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Emil de Cou, provides a live soundtrack featuring the unforgettable title number and “Make ’Em Laugh.” The 1952 musical comedy tells the story of three actors transitioning from silent films to “talkies” and stars Gene Kelly—who also directed and choreographed the film— Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. When this version of the film premiered in London at Royal Albert Hall, it was said, “However many times one has seen the film before and enjoyed Gene Kelly sing and dance on screen, it is an incredible treat to experience it in this fashion.”

Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers
Special Guest: Railroad Earth
Sunday, August 4, 2013 at 8 pm
$25-$42

Featuring skilled piano and accordion playing by the band’s Grammy-winning front man, Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers bring their jazz, rock, and R&B sound to the Filene Center. A Virginia native, Hornsby’s first musical project, Bruce Hornsby and the Range, garnered much success, with the band’s first album The Way It Is (1986) having four Billboard Hot 100 Hits. Hornsby also played the keyboard for the Grateful Dead from 1991 to1995 and performed on four of their albums. Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers formed in the late 1990s and currently includes Hornsby (piano, accordion), J. V. Collier (bass guitar), John “JT” Thomas (keyboard, organ), Bobby Read (saxophone, flute), Doug Derryberry (guitar, mandolin), and Sonny Emory (drums). The band’s most recent album, Bride of the Noisemakers (2011), features live recordings of 25 hit songs.

Americana band Railroad Earth brings its bluegrass-influenced sound to the Filene Center for the first time. Hailing from New Jersey, the six-piece group describes themselves as a “souped-up string band.” Railroad Earth formed in 2001 and performed at Telluride Bluegrass Festival before even releasing a full album. Later that year the band released its first album, The Black Bear Sessions, to much acclaim. Since then, Railroad Earth consistently draws fans to their engaging performances. The band’s most recent release is their 2010 self-titled album, which Relix magazine described as “tied together by the romantic sounds of Americana–mandolin, banjo, violin–which Railroad Earth nimbly reinvents with a modern flair.”
