Women’s Excellence Celebrates Osteoporosis Prevention Month; Preventative Counseling, Diagnostic Testing, and Treatment Available in Birmingham, Lake Orion, and Clarkston
Birmingham, MI (PRWEB) April 30, 2014 -- Bone is living tissue that is constantly being absorbed and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn’t keep up with the removal of old bone, causing the bones to become weak and brittle – so brittle that even minor trauma can cause a debilitating fracture. Most of these fractures commonly occur in the hip, wrist, or spine.
In the early stages of bone loss, there are usually no symptoms, but once bone has been weakened by osteoporosis back pain, loss of height over time, stooped posture, and easily fractured bones become evident. Non-modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis include female gender, advanced age, Caucasian or Asian descent, family history, and small skeletal frame. According to Shannon Hill, RN, MSN, CNP, nurse practitioner at Women's Excellence in Menopause in Lake Orion, “In women, a reduction of estrogen levels is the strongest risk factor for developing osteoporosis, which is why we start screening with bone mineral density testing at age 50. We also check thyroid levels in women routinely because an overactive thyroid can also cause bone loss”.
By now, it is common knowledge that adequate daily calcium and vitamin D in the diet are necessary for building and maintaining bone health. Sedentary lifestyle, excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use can increase osteoporosis risk as well. “The best way to prevent osteoporosis is to ensure 1,200 mg of calcium in divided doses and between 600-800 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day and to perform weight-bearing exercises regularly”, stated Hill. Weight bearing exercises include walking, jogging, running, and stair climbing.
Jonathan Zaidan, MD, FACOG, founder and physician at Women’s Excellence added, “What we really do well here at Women’s Excellence is provide preventative counseling in regard to many conditions that women are at high risk for and we do this throughout the lifespan of the patient. In regard to osteoporosis prevention, we begin screening and counseling women in their late teens and twenties because it is at that age when bone can be gained. In older women, especially post-menopausal women, we provide bone mineral density testing and treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis. However, by far the best treatment for osteoporosis is prevention”.
