Women’s Excellence Now Open in Birmingham, MI, Offering Weight Management Services and Other Screenings Important to the Prevention of Heart Disease in Women
Birmingham, Michigan (PRWEB) January 25, 2014 -- February 1st is Women’s Heart Health Day and Women’s Excellence routinely screens for heart disease in women and now offers a weight management program to help women reduce their risk for heart disease. Women’s Excellence reminds women that eating healthy, staying active, being smoke-free, and getting annual check-ups are simple steps that can be taken to reduce the risk for heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk factors for heart disease that can be modified or controlled include alcohol use, high blood cholesterol levels, diabetes, poor diet, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, and tobacco use.
Shannon Hill, RN, MSN, CNP, is a nurse practitioner and weight management specialist at Women’s Excellence in Lake Orion, and has been helping women for over a decade manage risk factors for heart disease. According to Hill, “Not every woman has a primary care provider or PCP. Often times the OB/GYN is the PCP for the patient, so we do screen blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and alcohol and tobacco use at routine visits when appropriate. We also can help women manage diabetes and high blood pressure until they can get in with a PCP. Our weight management program is designed to help women maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise and use medication on a short term basis to help augment weight loss.”
Every 90 seconds in the United States, a woman suffers from a heart attack. Common symptoms of a heart attack are:
• Heavy pressure on the chest
• Sharp pain in the neck, back, or jaw
• Severe shortness of breath
• Cold sweats (not caused by menopause)
• Unusual or explained tiredness
• Unfamiliar dizziness or light-headedness
• Unexplained nausea or vomiting
If you think you or someone you know is having a heart attack, call 911 immediately. Early treatment, within one hour, can save a life and prevent permanent damage to the heart muscle.
Dr. Jonathan Zaidan, MD, FACOG, founder and physician at Women’s Excellence, stated, “It is so important that women come in for their annual GYN visit every year. We cover several important heart screenings at the annual visit including blood pressure and cholesterol screening. We also offer help with weight management and smoking cessation which help reduce the risk of heart disease in women.” Don’t forget to wear red in the month of February to help raise awareness for American Heart Month and National Wear Red Day (the first Friday in February) to help raise awareness about heart disease.
