Women’s Excellence Physicians Perform Successful Robotic Laparoscopic Hysterectomy to Remove 16 Week-Sized Fibroid Uterus; Small Incisions and Quick Recovery Result

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the uterus muscle. These benign tumors usually cause painful, heavy periods. The large uterus can cause increased pressure in the pelvic cavity causing a feeling of heaviness as well as crowding other pelvic organs such as the bladder. Overactive bladder is a common complaint as the large uterus will ‘rest’ upon the bladder muscle. Fibroids are most common in women who are peri-menopausal and still producing estrogen. The production of estrogen causes fibroids to grow and will usually shrink along with the uterus after menopause.
“In this particular patient, she was 56 years old and presented with post-menopausal bleeding. A simple in office ultrasound revealed she had an enlarged uterus with several fibroids, and a thickened endometrial (uterine) lining - which is what was causing the postmenopausal bleeding. After we ruled out a cancerous process, we were clear to proceed with the robotic lap hyst to remove the uterus,” explained Zaidan. Before robotic and even laparoscopic surgery, a conventional (open) hysterectomy, removal of the uterus, was achieved with either a large vertical or transverse incision below the umbilicus and above the symphysis pubis. Recovery required a minimum 3-5 day hospital stay and pain control was challenging even with a pain pump.
With the advent of laparoscopy, incisions became smaller and recovery time was significantly reduced allowing most patients to go home the very same day. With the addition of robotic surgery to the traditional laparoscopy, the incisions became even smaller and recovery even shorter making minimally invasive surgery even more minimally invasive. “Dr. Zaidan is among the most experienced gynecologic robotic surgeons in the State of Michigan, so it was to my advantage and my patient’s advantage to have him there. As for the patient, she went home the next day after the surgery and is expected to have a full recovery in 1-2 weeks. But how is a 16 week-sized uterus removed through a small incision. “First, we performed a myomectomy and removed the fibroids from the uterus. Then we removed the rest of the uterus is sections”, stated Zaidan. “The result was a successful, uncomplicated, minimally-invasive hysterectomy, resolution to the patient problem, and most importantly a fully recovered, healthy patient,” added Bazger.
