If 2013 was the year for women to Lean In as proposed in an influential book written by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, then 2014 will be the year for women to take ultimate control of their career destiny.
Women and men do think of success and family differently. This notion should not take anyone in the workplace by surprise. However, this notion should by no means be interpreted as a woman’s desire to be less successful than her male counterpart.
Many women desire to have children and to actually spend meaningful time with them. Time spent with family and children is heavily weighted as a success factor. This is a sacrifice many successful men have accepted as a rite of passage to a triumphant career and one that most successful women struggle with. However, much like many women today, men are also re-defining what they consider to be a successful life experience to include quality of life. Albeit a controversial conversation, many women both young and old have chosen not to have children, simply as a well thought out choice, and not because they chose a career instead.
There are many women who will simply not desire to have a career as successful as an Arianna Huffington, Chair and President Huffington Post or Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo. However, we must be careful not to assert the idea that highly successful women somehow are not inclined to experience success in their personal lives. Even more harmful may be the assertion that women are not as interested or motivated to achieve higher degrees of success in the workplace such as Executive or Board level positions.
Having it all is not just a fallacy in beliefs for women, it is also a fallacy in beliefs for men. No one really gets the opportunity to have absolutely everything; it is simply impossible. To continue to believe this is a very childish and immature way of thinking.
As societal norms change, we will certainly continue this discussion well into the future. In 2016, or most certainly within the next decade America will likely elect its first female president. As a society the sooner we can accept that everyone should be given the opportunity to choose their path in life without having to justify their motives nor explain their decision making processes, and have acceptance with irrelevance to their gender, the sooner we will become a society that can truly say it has matured beyond the old “Pink is for girls and blue is for boys,” minutia.
