Wonderful Brand New Memoir: The Son With Two Moms, an Inspirational Story about a Boy and His Two Moms
Takoma Park, Maryland (PRWEB) December 16, 2015 -- "Events don't make up lives, moments do. In those moments, we find out who we are, and who we will become." -Tony Hynes.
He did not know it at the time, but the moments that made up his youth would shape not only Tony, but the nation he lived in as well. His homeland proclaimed that all of its people were free. However, there were subsets of the population that were left wanting for freedoms embrace. In 1992, one of those subsets was comprised of Gay people. Mary Hynes and Janet Simons, a lesbian couple, decided that they would not let that society dictate how they lived their lives. Part of that life including adopting a child, a process they were told would be hard given the political climate. Unabashed, they decided they would adopt a child anyway. They procured a social worker, and before they knew it they were assigned a child named "Tony." Mary and Janet's coworkers were not pleased, and muttered behind their backs constantly. In their eyes adopting a black child was ill advised, and could only have adverse consequences. Some prospective parents would have heeded their advice. Mary and Janet did not, and took Tony home to live with them just a few short weeks later.

This story, this inspirational memoir, is told through the eyes of Tony after he is taken home with his two moms. Tony gives a firsthand account of what it was like to grow up with his two moms during a time in which interracial families were less common, transracial gay adoptive households even less so. This is a very touching book. Written with great sensitivity, it goes over the author’s upbringing in great detail and great sensitivity to all that was going on around him at the time.
Even though it is only a couple of decades ago, we forget what novel ground this was in those days. The tensions in the adopting family and the reactions of grandparents, neighbors, schools are shown in all their rawest forms, and the effect (particularly on the author himself) is quite harrowing. This is a truly inspirational story.
