Woodard Junior High Recognized in Top 2% of AVID Schools Worldwide
Yuma, Arizona (PRWEB) December 15, 2015 -- For the second time, Woodard Junior High School has been awarded elite status as an AVID National Demonstration School after a rigorous inspection by a national visitation team. Demonstration School status places Woodard in the top 2% of the 5,400 AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) schools nationally and world-wide. Woodard is the only school so recognized in Yuma County.
Judy Walker, visitation team lead and Project Manager for AVID Schoolwide, said of Woodard: “The visiting team observed rigorous instruction and high levels of student engagement in all classrooms. The school receives tremendous support from the district office, allowing for a schoolwide implementation of AVID with strong fidelity.”
AVID is a kindergarten through postsecondary system that challenges all students to become confident scholars, fully prepared for successful completion of a four-year college program. This level of academic preparation also prepares students for success in other post-secondary programs, should they make that choice. While AVID provides an elective course to support students who take on the challenge of advanced courses, this program also trains faculty to use successful instructional strategies schoolwide, raising the level of instruction for all students. AVID programs prosper in all five District One middle schools.
AVID Chief Executive Officer Sandy Husk, PhD, notes the significance of attaining National Demonstration School status: “Schools recognized as National Demonstration sites have proven their ability to successfully implement the AVID Elective course and take the strategies schoolwide to impact all students.” As a Demonstration School, Woodard serves as a model of these strategies for visitors from other schools.
The AVID program at Woodard Junior High School is supported by a grant from the Department of Defense Education Agency and particularly welcomes student dependents of active-duty military personnel, Border Patrol personnel, and civilians employed on our military bases.
