WordSouth client Wiregrass Electric Cooperative celebrates 75 years of service at annual meeting
Rainsville, Alabama (PRWEB) October 31, 2014 -- Wiregrass Electric Cooperative (WEC) celebrated a service milestone Oct. 17 when it hosted its annual membership meeting highlighting 75 years of providing power to rural Southeast Alabama.
"We still stand on the principles this cooperative was founded on 75 years ago," says Les Moreland, chief executive officer of WEC. "The electric cooperative concept was developed to help rural Americans bring electricity to their farms and communities when no one else would. It's a model that is just as strong today as it was in 1939, and I am proud of the impact this cooperative continues to make in people's lives."
Each year, WEC holds its annual meeting in Hartford, Ala. Members hear reports from management, select board of trustees members, vote on important issues about how their cooperative functions and enjoy entertainment and door prizes.
This year’s meeting was a special event, marking WEC's 75th anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, employees cooked hamburgers and hotdogs, singers performed and every member left with a free 10-inch cast iron skillet with WEC’s logo embossed on the bottom.
“We want to say thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special,” says Deanna Albritton, member services coordinator at WEC. “It was great to see so many people coming to celebrate what we’ve accomplished over the past 75 years.”
Brad Kimbro, WEC's chief operating officer, agrees. "This was indeed a special day for every employee and every member of Wiregrass Electric Cooperative," he says. "The longevity of this member-owned cooperative is a true testimony to the impact it's had on the Wiregrass region of Alabama."
Nearly 1,700 members voted either by mail or at the Hartford Office. In the only contested board election, incumbent Nolan Laird was returned to his seat. “I am very appreciative of the opportunity to serve,” says Laird, “and I am thankful for the members who put their trust in me.” The membership also approved two bylaw amendments, one dealing with re-districting and the other with membership requirements.
After the meeting, the WEC Board of Trustees met to elect officers. Danny McNeil was elected president, John Clark, Jr. was elected vice president and Debra Baxley was elected secretary-treasurer.
