Work Comp Leader to Deliver Industry Insight on Prescription Drug Abuse at National Rx Drug Abuse Summit
Memphis, TN (PRWEB) April 18, 2014 -- The merged entity of Progressive Medical and PMSI, a workers’ compensation specialty services company, will share insight on the issue of prescription drug abuse in the workers’ compensation system at the National Rx Drug Abuse Summit, April 22-24, 2014, in Atlanta. A Gold Sponsor of the Summit, the largest national collaboration of professionals impacted by prescription drug abuse, the company’s chief clinical officer, Tron Emptage, RPh, medical director, Robert Hall, M.D., and vice president of Government Affairs, Brian Allen, will bring their expertise to the forum in two separate sessions which focus on the role of the Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) to influence outcomes.
“Many workers’ compensation research studies show that narcotics comprise about one-quarter of prescription spend,” stated Emptage. “As a workers’ compensation PBM, we can positively impact the use of opioid analgesics in injured workers to help mitigate prescription drug misuse and abuse using tools such as predictive modeling, clinical oversight, and intervention efforts such as clinical outreach and peer-to-peer discussions.”
One of the most effective ways that a PBM can impact prescription drug abuse is by working with the prescriber. As part of the Third-Party Payer educational track, Dr. Hall and Tron Emptage will participate on a panel titled “Teaming with Clinicians in the Intervention Process.” They will discuss factors that influence outcomes, proven outreach methods and tactics that PBMs and payors should use to involve prescribers as partners in the intervention process.
Additionally, by working collaboratively with payors, a PBM can effectively mitigate the health and financial consequences of chronic pain to make certain the injured worker receives the right medication at the right time. Tron Emptage and Brian Allen will present a Vision Session titled, “Medication Trends Shaping Workers’ Compensation,” to discuss the various influences on outcomes – from policy and politics to price and product- from both a clinical and legislative perspective.
