Moreover, demand for freelancers and wages earned are expected to increase through the end of 2013. Specific findings include the following:

CALIFORNIA HAS HIGHEST DEMAND FOR FREELANCERS
Growth in demand for onsite, professional freelancer labor has increased an average of 11.5 percent since the beginning of the year. The average freelancer assignment value has risen 23 percent since 2012. The five states with the highest demand for freelance workers are:

  • Texas
  • New York
  • Florida
  • Pennsylvania

BUSINESSES WITH MORE THAN 50 EMPLOYEES OFFER A GREATER OPPORTUNITY FOR ONGOING WORK THAN THOSE WITH UNDER TEN EMPLOYEES

Businesses of all sizes are increasingly using freelancers as part of their workforce. Businesses with over fifty employees use the same freelancer for an average of nine jobs per year. Conversely, businesses with under ten employees use the same freelancer for approximately four jobs per year. Thus, larger companies provide freelancers with a greater opportunity to find ongoing work.    

TECHNOLOGY AND COMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES ARE USING MORE FREELANCER THAN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY

THE FUTURE: MEDIA PRODUCTION WILL EXPONENTIALLY INCREASE SPENDING ON FREELANCERS

Spending on contract labor is expected to increase across a variety of industries throughout the end of 2013. Total freelancer earnings for 2013 are projected to be 72 percent greater than in 2012. The three industries with the greatest projected spending on freelancers are:

  • Media Production: 1222%
  • Consumer Services: 567%
  • Administrative Support: 391%
