Work Market Study Shows Freelance and Independent Contractor Workforce Poised to Transform Businesses’ Human Capital Strategies
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 23, 2014 -- Work Market, the software solution that helps companies easily curate and manage their freelance workforce, today announced the release of a white paper showing a snapshot of the fastest growing segment of the freelance economy—onsite freelancers and contractors. This white paper provides detailed insight into the inner workings of this on-demand workforce and shows how companies can build and leverage their own onsite freelance workforce as part of a comprehensive human capital management strategy.
In the next six years, the number of freelance workers is expected to grow to seventy million. More specifically, onsite, local work (where physical presence is required to complete assignments) is expected to grow to $15.5 billion. This upward trend is happening across industries, including information technology and telecommunication, retail merchandising, promotional marketing, digital signage, medical device service, and facilities management.
“With this transformational growth in the work market, there was limited knowledge of who onsite freelance workers really are and how they are working in the economy,” says Jeff Leventhal, CEO of Work Market. “To close this gap, we surveyed close to ten thousand freelance workers and found that, by and large, onsite local freelancing can be an ongoing career with strong opportunities for professional growth and development. This is great news for individuals who wish to make their living from freelancing as well as for the companies that will benefit from using freelancers.”
The survey found that approximately half of freelance workers reported being part of this workforce for up to five years and one-quarter for over ten years. The survey also identified that freelancers have a wide range of skills, particularly in technology and communications, and that most are mobile enabled, helping them efficiently complete projects. The majority of freelancers reported taking on multiple assignments per week (an average of one to five) and a willingness to travel for assignments.
“As different business sectors continue turning to freelancers and contractors in droves, companies need to think about the complexities associated with curating and managing an onsite workforce, oftentimes at mass scale,” adds Leventhal. “By providing businesses of all sizes with a reliable way to identify freelance talent coupled with a superior integrated technology platform to efficiently implement every aspect of the independent worker relationship, Work Market provides companies with an optimal solution to these challenges.”
