Working Holiday: Americans Use Just 10 of 14 Vacation Days
Denver, CO (PRWEB) November 26, 2013 -- While three out of five American employees feel vacation deprived, Alabamans are tops in making sure they take some time to get away while still being thrifty, according to data from Expedia.com® and ShopAtHome.com®.
Expedia.com’s 2013 Vacation Deprivation® study shows Americans, on average, took just 10 of their 14 vacation days, leaving a whopping 500 million vacation days unused. And, even when they do take time off, 67 percent of Americans still clock in, checking email or voice messages, according to Expedia®. Looking at global travelers, the survey found the French take all of their 30 available days of vacation, but still feel deprived, while Norwegians, with 25 days off, don’t feel deprived much at all.
“We understand serious workloads can sometimes put a damper on vacation plans,” said Lesley Kennedy, ShopAtHome.com senior managing editor. “But if you plan early, save up and pay attention to sales and deals, the thought of holiday travel doesn’t have to be akin to a lump of coal. ShopAtHome.com has teamed up with Expedia to offer great tips and advice so you can take advantage of those hard-earned vacation days.”
Expedia and ShopAtHome.com are committed to teaching consumers on how to make the most of their savings and their vacation time. According to online trips booked via Expedia through ShopAtHome.com in 2012, Alabama travelers spent the most money per capita, but also earned the most Cash Back via their purchases.
After Alabama, states with travelers who spent the most money per capita were Wyoming, Arizona, Massachusetts, Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Colorado, Connecticut and Maine, respectively. The 10 states spending the least, per capita, were West Virginia, Vermont, Arkansas, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oklahoma, California, Ohio, Texas and South Dakota.
After Alabama, states earning the most Cash Back via Expedia purchases were Massachusetts, Arizona, Illinois and Delaware. The five least thriftiest states: North Dakota, West Virginia, Vermont, New Mexico and Louisiana.
“As a working mother, I know firsthand how hard it can be to justify both the time and money it costs to take a vacation. The Vacation Deprivation study emphasizes how many consumers feel the same way, and as a result are not taking their vacation days,” said Sarah Gavin, director of public relations and social media for Expedia.com. “We work with ShopAtHome to show consumers how smart planning and cost-consciousness can help them make the most of their available vacation and enjoy their time off, guilt-free.”
Americans who booked travel through Expedia using ShopAtHome.com’s Cash Back program spent the most on travel in March 2012, but, interestingly, the biggest Cash Back rewards were reaped during the months of September and October.
“Paying attention to sales and promotions will help you get the deepest travel savings,” Kennedy said. “The sooner know your holiday travel dates, the more Cash Back you can score by keeping an eye on both airline and hotel sales and ShopAtHome.com incentives. When you stack those together, your savings could afford you everything from a great dinner out to an extra night’s stay at the hotel. Now, that’s holiday cheer.”
